About BEAM

The mission of BEAM is to create pathways for students from low-income and historically marginalized communities to become scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists. Led by staff with these same technical backgrounds, BEAM believes that pathways to STEM careers are created through community, individual support, and access to advanced work that typically lies outside most school curricula. We work to directly support students and to transition them to other supportive enrichment programs that enable their future success.

BEAM's model provides continuous support from middle school through college graduation, including intense academic summer programs for middle school students (after 6th and 7th grade), weekend classes and mentoring, and STEM-focused support through college. Our program includes not just access to learning advanced math but also support finding and applying to other opportunities, including support with college admissions and financial aid. In addition to our academic content, bringing students into community is a key part of our mission and all of our work is designed to support that goal.

BEAM has grown from a small summer program serving 17 students in the summer of 2011 to a year-round, national program, serving 420+ students at six summer program sites and 600+ students in year-round programming in New York City and Los Angeles this school year. In addition, our BEAM National pilot program now reaches over 500 elementary-aged students in seven different states, working to create a new nationwide pathway modeled on our local work.

With our recent strategic plan, our team has committed to transforming the organization from a successful startup to a more mature and scalable organization that can drive change across the country.

DESCRIPTION OF ROLE 

The High School STEM Enrichment Coordinator is an exciting and rewarding role, directly impacting the lives of low income/underserved high school students and their families as they explore mathematical reasoning, STEM experiences and navigate pivotal academic and enrichment milestones. Some of your primary responsibilities will be to:

• Build meaningful relationships with BEAM students (grades 8–11) and their families, helping them stay engaged with our programs and navigate the exciting (and sometimes challenging) path through high school and beyond.
• Support the recruitment and engagement of high school students, inspiring them to explore STEM experiences.

• Coordinate field trips, support the establishment of external partnerships with high schools and STEM organizations while contributing to the creation of workshops that support our students in understanding and exploring the amazing possibilities of a career in STEM.

Your presence will make a real difference—whether you’re cheering students on at a Saturday class, offering guidance during a pivotal moment, or simply being there to listen. Above all, you’ll ensure that BEAM’s programming is not just available but truly responsive to students’ needs, making sure they feel supported every step of the way. 

This role also offers a unique math/STEM summer experience. During the summer you would be expected to either live and work at a vibrant residential camp for 7th grade students in upstate New York (with room, board, and travel provided) or a daily summer camp in New York City for 6th graders. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Coordination (60%)

High school student recruitment and engagement

• • Support BEAM’s relationships with a portfolio of eligible partner schools to achieve our student enrollment targets. 
  • Support the coordination of in-school and after school events, workshops and initiatives designed to directly recruit and retain students and engage families in our enrichment programs.
  • Support the coordination of student admissions process with the goal of enrolling low income, underserved students with a high potential of thriving in a STEM career.

Student advising and communication

• • Conduct regular student and families outreach/check ins and act as a mentor tracking students’ academic progress,  supporting students in navigating high school resources, selecting classes that will prepare them for rigorous STEM college experiences and providing encouragement.
  • Support 1:1 and/or small group High School admissions advising.
  • Provide 1:1 and/or small group High School external STEM enrichment advising for a cohort of about 170 students.
  • Create weekly newsletters to students and families including news about BEAM’s programs, interesting STEM enrichment opportunities and/or high school relevant news to support student engagement and academic success.

Saturday and after school academic program support

• • Collaborate with program leaders to create and teach one off and/or a short series of student workshops relevant to high school academic success and/or STEM career exploration.
  • Act as teacher assistant during Saturday and/or after school math and STEM enrichment classes supporting instruction and/or tutoring students in small groups.
  • Track students’ attendance in classes and other BEAM services and reach out to absent students and their families to monitor engagement.
  • Coordinate the collection of student performance data to inform course offerings and the delivery of constructive feedback to students in their STEM exploration journey.
  • Support program leadership observing instructors by taking notes to support the delivery of feedback that enhances the quality of STEM learning experiences provided to students.
  • Collaborate with Central Program staff to shape the design of future STEM enrichment curriculum and programming.

Program Operations and Logistics

• • Support the coordination of logistics such as breakfast, lunch, and materials that help maintain the program. Troubleshoot any in the moment issues.
  • Coordinate the collection of student data, surveys and outreach and make sure data is updated in BEAM CRM systems (ie. Salesforce)
  • Organize tutoring groups and/or office hours for students to receive support as needed from BEAM.
  • Organize student events including community building events and STEM enrichment field trips during the school year.

Summer Camp Support (40%)

• Work at one of our summer math camps as an instructor or as part of the leadership team: 
  • BEAM Discovery, our five week day program for rising 7th graders in New York City OR 
  • BEAM Summer Away, our 4 week Upstate New York live on campus program (3 weeks of camp for working with students, plus days before and after camp, working with staff).
• Support interview for candidates for seasonal summer camp staff.
• Support the Middle School team with partner school visits and student recruitment. 
• Support summer camp planning logistics.

QUALIFICATIONS

We understand that there are many paths to acquiring experience and therefore welcome candidates from diverse and nontraditional backgrounds for this role who have demonstrated equivalent transferable skills to carry out the major duties outlined in this job description.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of experience tutoring, mentoring and/or being a teacher assistant at STEM enrichment classes, afterschool classes, summer programs and/or schools at a high school or undergraduate level.
• STEM undergraduate degree and/or career related STEM experience.

Professional Strengthsand Experiences

• Passionate about STEM and experience advising students in participating in out of school STEM enrichment programs.
• Strong communication skills and experience building strong relationships with schools and underserved students/families with an inspiring, and growth-oriented message.
• Data driven planner focused on goals and prioritizing the work that drives impact.
• Solutions-oriented problem solver with strong organization skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines..

Significant pluses include:

• Strong background in undergraduate mathematics material, such as abstract algebra, number theory, combinatorics, statistics, precalculus and/or calculus.
• Verbal/written fluency in Spanish. 
• Familiarity with using Salesforce for program management.
• Familiarity with spreadsheets formulas, pivot tables and data analysis.
• Experience with program admissions processes and family engagement
• Experience creating marketing content for promoting programs

APPLICATION PROCESS

Our process, as described below, has approximately four stages and we anticipate the process lasting about 4-6 weeks in total with someone starting in the role as soon as possible, although we are flexible with the specific date. The application process steps are:

• Sample project to be submitted online
• 1-2 interviews online (over zoom)

SALARY, BENEFITS, AND OTHER DETAILS

The salary range for this position is $50,000-$62,000. This is a good faith anticipated range of the job, but the actual pay will be based on any applicant’s skill and experience.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE:Monday-Friday,  10 am to 6 pm; 

• In person 3 Saturdays per month from 9am to 3:30pm (September to May). Mondays are off when working on Saturdays. 
• Flexible hours are available most days and occasional evening work to accommodate families’ schedules may be necessary with working hours potentially shifting to 11:30am to 7pm once or twice a week.
• A regular week involves a total of 37.5 hours of work.
• Note: During the summer, depending on the Summer Camp type, weekend and evenings work for up to 4 weeks might be required.
